"It's not my thoughts I got a problem with being hidden away," she explained, relaxing as she tried to 'adjust' the mental walls she was putting up. "It's everyone else's. I speak my mind no matter who's listening, so I'm just as open as most anyone I read." Still, she couldn't be sure how this was going to work in the long run. Sure, she was apparently doing what Emma wanted her to do. She got that part. Fine. But would she have to continue concentrating to keep the barriers up? Did telepaths just learn to focus on several things instantaneously? Or was this thing supposed to stay up until she mentally pulled it down again?
Either way, it was all a little more work than she was ever used to doing inside her own brain. That was just part of living a life as the only telepath in town, though.
It even sounded weird sometimes to call herself that. She didn't used to have a name for it, after all. Birdy was just...Birdy.
"So do you close yourself off like that around everyone or do you just not want me pickin up how much you don't want to be here right now?" she asked, taking a shot in the dark. Emma hadn't opened herself up enough for her to hear any thoughts like that, but Birdy wasn't blind. Classy lady, nicely dressed, in this old dump? She might have relied somewhat on her abilities but it didn't mean she was blind.

Emma sighed. Oh, she was so inexperienced it was laughable. "My shields are up, and I still read your mind, dear, remember? It's only a one way street, people can't get in. You can still get out, but that will be for another lesson," Emma explained as if it were common knowledge.
"As for why my shields are up," Emma explained, "I would rather not have my students probing my mind. And honestly? No, I don't find this place considerably attractive. But I do want to train you."
Emma smiled. "Today was a good first lesson. Next time we should do this at a more... suitable location." Emma opened up her mind for a second and let Birdy see the address of her apartment so she knew where it was and how to get there. "Come by next week," Emma offered. She smiled again, put on her sunglasses, and walked out to the car.
<<Oh, and Birdy? Don't forget to practice.>> Emma sent as a last thought to the girl before speeding away. Her new protege... Emma liked the sound of that. Now if only she could get some exactly like her... that would be nice...
