Full name: Kurt Wagner
Goes by: Kurt or ‘The Fuzzy Dude’
Code name/Alias: Nightcrawler
Gender: Male
Age/Birth date: 16/ 13. August. 1990.
Place of birth: An undisclosed location in southern Bavaria, Germany
Hometown: Friedrichsburg, Bavaria, Germany
Height: 5’4”
Weight: 65kg
Hair: Black
Eyes: Yellow, Brown when using his image inducer.
Education: High School Sophomore.
Occupation: Student.
Family: Adoptive parents, Mystique (mother)
Criminal record/citizenship: None/German
Affiliation: X-Men
General Appearance: In his natural form, Nightcrawler is perhaps one of the most startling mutants around. His entire body is covered in short blue fur that lengthens and darkens into shoulder length black hair on his head. He only has three fingers on each hand as well as three toes on each foot, which are fully opposable and able to grasp objects. Curling down from the bottom of his spine he also has a fully prehensile furry tail that can function as a fifth limb. Furthermore, he has slightly pointed ears and small fangs, with only add to his demonic image. His uniform consists of a tight black one piece jumpsuit with a red v-shaped adornment on the front and back, as well as yellow gloves for both his hands and feet.
When using his image inducer, Kurt can mimic a human appearance, which essentially mirrors his true form with the mutant traits removed. He is relatively pale in human form, in keeping with the expectations of people about Germans. His illusionary form is almost always dressed casually in wide slacks and t-shirts, though he is almost always wearing his uniform underneath.
Personality: Nightcrawler is a jovial, quirky character that is known to kid around a lot, sometimes more than is prudent. He takes life easy and is out to enjoy himself. He likes to make jokes and pranks, though these are rarely malicious or spiteful. However, he does have a tendency to not think things through completely, which can sometimes lead to unintended side effects. But even in dire circumstances, Kurt can be counted on to have a humorous remark on hand to lighten things up.
However, Kurt also has a serious side. He is extremely devoted to his friends, a fact that often gets him into trouble when the desire to help a friend overrides what little common sense he has. He is also devoted to Professor Xavier’s cause and greatly respects the X-Men’s mentor, both for his vision and the fact that he gave Kurt a home that would accept him as he is.
Underneath his cheerful exterior, Kurt has deep seated issues about his appearance and the reactions of non mutants to it. Before he was given his image inducer he was a virtual outcast, a state that he is loathe to return to. As a result, he is quite paranoid about anything that could reveal him for what he is to the world at large, a fear that even overrules his otherwise strongly held principles.
Powers: Nightcrawler is extremely agile and fast, easily exceeding the capabilities of human acrobats and there are only a few mutants that are more agile than him. His spine is more flexible than that of a normal human, allowing him to perform contortions that would otherwise be impossible. His prehensile tail is in fact strong enough to support his whole body weight for a brief period, not that he weighs much.
He is also able to grip things with his feet and tail which together with his agility allows him to find purchase in places where normal humans would simply fall off. He is able to hang upside down from tree branches and similar objects with ease. This goes so far that he can find purchase on vertical surfaces, provided they are not too frictionless.
Due to his dark fur, and a variation of his teleportation powers, Nightcrawler becomes almost invisible in shadows, though this only applies to the visual spectrum. Anyone able to see in higher or lower spectrums of light can easily spot him.
However, his main power is teleportation, actually a brief dimensional shift that allows him to disappear in one point and reappear in a point nearby that he can see or knows well instantaneously. Kurt's teleportation always involves a brief sulphurous cloud at both ends of the teleportation, and an audible 'bamf' noise as the air rushes in to fill the space he just left. He is able to teleport other people with him, though this requires greater effort. Currently he can teleport two other people as well as himself, as long as he can establish physical contact with them. When he teleports, he and those with him retain the same momentum and direction of movement that they had before, meaning that he has to be careful not to slam into anything when he teleports. He can teleport in extremely rapid succession and can coordinate his movements well enough to be able to perform truly impressive feats of acrobatics when he reappears, despite the sudden spatial shift. For instance, he is able to continue an unbroken series of cartwheels through a series of teleportations or teleport accurately enough to be able to grab hold of a handy branch and change his direction directly after teleporting.
As well as this he carries an image inducer made by Professor Xavier. It is set to display his appearance, but could be modified to show any other guise by someone with enough tech savvy to do so.
Weaknesses: Nightcrawler’s main weakness is his appearance and the fear of its discovery. He is also prone to rash actions, which can often get him into trouble. His image inducer is prone to failing at inopportune moments, which can cause him to appear in his true form without warning.
The dimension he shifts into is inhabited by hostile creatures of demonic appearance. Usually he travels through their plane too quickly to be threatened, but if something extends his stay, he is not only under threat from them there, he also leaves behind unsealed gateways that allow them to follow him to the real world. Nightcrawler is extremely afraid of these creatures.
Power Potential: Even with line of sight or familiarity, Nightcrawler’s teleportation is currently limited to about 2.5 miles. This could be significantly extended with training, though his fear of the inhabitants of the other plane inhibits his progress.
He is also limited in how many people he can teleport. At the moment he can teleport up to three other people. With training, this could potentially be extended further, going so far as to be able to teleport the whole X team in one go.
History: Kurt grew up as an adopted child in the small town of Friedrichsburg in southern Germany. Though is parents were loving and supportive, they were the only ones to truly accept him in the conservative Bavarian community. Kurt lived as a virtual outcast, taking most of his schooling at home and avoiding virtually all contact with the outside world. The mutant phenomena was not known to anyone in his community, and so they regarded Kurt as a freak or even some sort of demonic entity.
Since he was universally avoided, Kurt had virtually no contact with other people, apart from his adoptive parents. Fortunately for him, his parents were loving and supportive, despite the stigma of his appearance. When they found Kurt abandoned near a river bank, they saw a helpless little creature rather than a monster. His parents had never had any children of their own, and so Kurt filled a void in their lives just as they did the same for him.
As the parents of the 'monster', Kurt's parents were shunned as he was, and so the three of them became extremely close, spending most of their days together. Kurt was a lively boy, despite the lack of friends his age, and was often quite a handful for his parents to manage. But they regarded his antics fondly, since they were happy that he was able to enjoy life despite the way others treated him.
However, for all the love they gave him, his parents had difficulty keeping up with Kurt. His teleportation powers have always been a natural part of him, something he uses on an almost instinctual level. When he was younger, he would sometimes teleport without consciously wanting to, appearing without warning in another room of the house or even beyond it. One particularly memorable incident was when, as a six year old, his curiosity about the ornate spire and stained glass windows of the local church caused him to suddenly appear in the middle of the church during Sunday Mass. Having an apparently demonic creature suddenly appear in the middle of the church in a cloud of sulphur did nothing to make Kurt popular in town.
Had the people of the town not been as afraid of Kurt as they hated him, he might well have gotten hurt after that incident, but even the most aggressive of the townsfolk preferred to avoid him rather than give him any trouble. However, any sort of crime or accident in the village would be quickly attributed to him, and whenever he left the house, there would always be a few people muttering about him behind his back.
Eventually, Kurt spent most of his time in his home on the edge of town, only venturing beyond the garden at night or when he could be sure no-one would see him. Despite the hostile reaction of the villagers, he was continuously curious about the goings on in the village, and the need to stay unseen taught him quite a bit about the value of being stealthy. And how useful it is to be able to teleport into little hidey holes that no-one thinks to look into. It was on one of these jaunts that he also learned that he could make himself virtually invisible when in shadows, though he can't really explain how he does it. And given his personality, he hasn't really spent much time thinking about it.
Kurt's parents realized that this state could not continue forever. Kurt needed an education and someone who could deal with his special nature in a more focused way. Luckily, Professor Xavier located Kurt when seeking students for his newly founded Xavier Institute. Upon hearing that there were others like him and that Kurt could find a place that would not only accept him but also teach him to use his strange gift, both he and his parents were overjoyed. Luckily, Kurt spoke fluent English, so the transition to the US was no problem for him.
At first, Kurt had a little trouble overcoming his worry that people would fear him, but he quickly adjusted to the fact that such strangeness was widely accepted in the Xavier institute. He quickly turned from being slightly shy to an extreme extrovert, always ready to play a game or have fun in some other way. The gift of the image inducer allowed him even greater freedom, and for the first time Kurt was able to freely interact with the outside world. School was a pleasure for him, though it was the social aspect rather than the academic one that drew him in. Kurt quickly became the class clown, a fact that has landed him in front of the principal on a few occasions when he went too far with his goofing off.
Kurt has been with the Xavier institute from the beginning, though he was initially not selected for the combat team of the X-Men, since Professor Xavier felt that he needed to gain a little more maturity before he could be sent out on potentially dangerous missions. Kurt was always eager to become a 'real X-Man', and persistently worked at being accepted into the team. Though he still jokes around a lot, he finally managed to demonstrate that he can be serious when the need for it arises. The main event that allowed him to demonstrate this was when an experiment aimed at studying the dimension he shifts through when teleporting caused him to realize that the plane he moved through was actually inhabited by a race of hostile creatures. During the experiment he was almost killed by the demonic creatures and barely managed to shift back to the normal plane before he was devoured. At first, Kurt was terrified and vowed never to use his teleportation again, despite assurances that he would be safe as long as he simply teleported normally, since he spends far too little time in the other realm to be at risk. However, when the creatures found a way to use the half closed gateways left behind by his extended teleportation to enter the normal plane, Kurt was able to overcome his fear and save several innocents by teleporting them to safety. After that event, it was acknowledged that while Kurt may be a joker most of the time, he is capable of acting responsibly and could be trusted to accompany the team.
Kurt tries hard to keep friendly relations going with all of the X-Men, though his clownish ways often mean that he isn’t taken seriously. He has no idea who his real parents are, and he's never really thought about them except in the most abstract terms. He would like to know who they are, but it's not something that really concerns him most of the time.
Sample RP: “A party tonight?! Allright!” Kurt exclaimed, leaping into the air with one fist upraised. “I’m gonna shake it out tonight! Who’s coming? Is everyone invited? I hope you got some girls coming, the chicks just dig the fuzzy dude.” Kurt assumed a stance of mock thoughtfulness, though he was obviously just fooling around. “But if the adults find out, they’ll probably make us stay in and practice for that Geography test tomorrow.” His thoughtful expression breaks out into another toothy, excited grin. “But we’re X-Men right? We’re here to solve problems! All we need is a plan.” Kurt trails off into silence, his mind already furtively working on some sort of half cocked plan to get them out of the mansion undetected.
