Basic Character Information
Type: Canon
Full name: Lance Alvers
Goes by: Lance
Code name(s)/Alias(es): Avalanche
Gender: Male
Age/Birth date: 18/ July 28
Place of birth: Chicago, IL
Hometown: Chicago, IL
Height: 6’ 0”
Weight: 186 lbs.
Hair: Brown, cut in a mullet-like hairstyle.
Eyes: Brown
Education: High School Senior
Occupation: Student
Family: Lance’s parents are named Nick and Kate Alvers, though Lance was raised mostly in foster care. Lance has no known siblings.
Criminal record/citizenship: No Arrests/US citizen
Affiliation: Brotherhood
General Appearance: Lance is taller than average. He has brown hair that he keeps long (mostly to annoy conservative authority figures) and brown eyes. His skin is tan/olive colored, and his features are vaguely Mediterranean, especially his nose which is fairly large, but somehow manages to fit his face. Lance’s build is muscular and solid. Though he does spend time lifting weights for strength training and for vanity’s sake, he is by no means overly large or overly muscled.
Lance likes to dress like an 80’s rebel reject. His favorite outfit is a leather vest over a black t-shirt, torn jeans, and boots. That isn’t to say he can’t dress correctly if he absolutely has to. He has enough “proper” pieces in his closet to pull off clean-cut looks for work or interviews, and enough “nice” pieces for a few outfits for dates and parties and such.
His battle suit is fairly unique. It consists of a full navy blue body suit with maroon accents and a high collar. He covers it with silver colored body armor and shoulder plates. His boots have metal plates attached and he wears gauntlets over his arms. On his head he wears a helmet of a clear material. The helmet looks like glass, but it’s lighter and does not shatter easily.
Personality: On the surface, Lance seems to be your typical thug. He is impulsive, brash, quick tempered, and violent. Most people brush him off because of these traits and see him as a complete loser unworthy of investments of their time or energy. Lance has taken this assessment and embraced it, making a two dimensional mask that he himself believes half the time. However, he has a few more layers beyond just what is seen.
Despite what many might think, Lance’s bad behaviors are rarely motivated simply by sadism or a need to see everything in chaos. His motivations lie more in control, security, and his own survival; and his need for control directly feeds into the other two. He believes that with enough control he can guarantee that he will have a life that he can enjoy and be satisfied with.
Lance equates power with control and as such has a fascination with power, his own and others. He prefers physical strength over other shows of power, but he is easily impressed by any display. That being said, however, he does not feel the need to go out of his way to gain more power for himself, and most likely will not abandon his friends for any kind of power increase… even if he never lets them forget what he would give up for them. Lance also doesn’t like his authority/control challenged. Lance has issues with authority, so he tends to dislike people like principals, teachers, cops, bosses, and parental figures. There are a few exceptions that he doesn’t mind or that he respects, but they are few and far between. He likes to be the “alpha male” of any group he’s in, and he tends to butt heads with any other “alpha male” types that might be around. Also, Lance is very territorial over anything he perceives as “his.” As such, he doesn’t like people touching his stuff, whether it is his jeep, things in his room, or his love interest.
Despite being pretty loyal to his friends, and generally not wanting to genuinely hurt random people (unless, you know, they were pissing him off or otherwise asking for it), Lance’s primary concern is with his own survival. He uses people and situations to his advantage whenever he can, and generally has a self-driven purpose to anything he happens to do. Even his allegiance to Magneto comes not from a belief in their ideals, but rather he believes that in the end their side will win.
Finally, for Lance, it’s all about security, even if he would deny it vehemently if asked. While prancing around in costumes and going on missions is fun and awesome and he rarely hesitates to follow orders to the best of his ability, he prefers the smaller “safe” missions to the riskier “important” ones.
All this is not to say that he gets no pleasure from life. He does. Lance’s likes include, but are not limited to: booze, boobs, being in charge, pretty girls, leather, fast cars, being outside, getting into fights (that he can win), bothering Scott Summers, and making puns. Mostly about rocks. He likes rock music, not because of its name, but because it’s the only kind that doesn’t suck. And he likes his guitar, despite not being able to play it very well.
Powers: Lance can project vibrations into any inorganic object. While he can vibrate just about anything, he chooses to focus his powers on the ground and/or the building he is in (along with an occasional vending machine), often creating fissures or rolling the ground to knock over his enemies or whoever he’s trying to trip today. His control over his powers, while far from perfect, is good, and he can create vibrations soft enough to barely move objects off their shelves to those powerful enough to bring down an average building. Through intense concentration, he can move objects already on the ground, like rocks and boulders, and can shift earth around to make the terrain what he needs it to be.
Weaknesses: Lance’s powers do not work on organic objects, as his powers will rebound onto himself, shattering his bones. Prolonged or intense use of his powers also gives Lance acute migraines, and even mild use of them gives him frequent headaches.
Power Potential: Lance has the potential to be very strong indeed. With enough training, he can increase the size of his area of influence, increase the magnitude of his vibrations, and refine how well he manipulates his environment. That said, he will probably always have the limitations of needing to be close to his targets as he acts more like an epicenter of destruction than a projector.
History: Lance was born in the Chicago area to Nick and Kate. At age five, he was placed in the foster care system for reasons he never really understood. After that he was tossed from foster home to foster home, rarely staying in a home for more than a year. Because of his rather chaotic childhood, he never really learned to trust anyone or form any kind of permanent bonds. As such, he was more comfortable playing the rebel and delinquent when he was younger and eventually completely took on that role. While hardly the worse student in the school, he did get in trouble for fighting and bullying, vandalism, general rule breaking, and (once in high school) showing up drunk to class.
Freshman year only got worse when his powers manifested at fourteen. Things seemed to shake whenever he got angry (which was often) and he started getting migraines regularly. It took him weeks to control it enough to make the tremors happen only when he wanted them to, though he could not get enough control to lessen the migraines or precisely control his powers. He did gain an appreciation for his power, however, and mentally adapted by coming to believe that while the powers made him different and “a freak” they also made him special and superior to the baseline humans around him.
While he never met another person like himself with powers, Lance had a feeling he was not unique. That was confirmed senior year when a mysterious man approached him. He said he had a place on his team for someone with Lance’s ‘talents.’ At first, Lance wanted nothing to do with it. While the thought of living with others like him appealed to him, he was not willing to give up what freedom and autonomy he had just to be someone else’s soldier. However, that choice was quickly taken out of his hands as his impulsive nature and tendency to flirt lead to a demolished building and a bad situation for him all around. While no one connected him immediately to the disaster, he knew it would be all too easy if he stuck around any longer. So he took this “Magneto’s” offer and moved once again, this time to a little town called Bayville.
Other: As stated before, Lance can carry a tune on a guitar, though never ask him to actually sing. You won’t like what comes out. Lance also likes cars, and is good at fixing them. In Chicago, he worked part time in his friend’s father’s auto shop, and will probably consider applying for a job as a mechanic in Bayville if he can’t get cash by… other means. Lance also hates to fly and hates being on boats, as he gets both airsick and seasick.
Sample RP: ‘What a dump…’ Lance thought as he looked around the entrance of his new home. Despite the place being the size of a small mansion, it clearly needed some repair. The paint on the walls were chipping and everything had a layer of grime that Lance couldn’t tell if it came from age, dust, or both. The furniture that he could see was both outdated and obviously in disrepair. One table looked like it was a second away from collapsing under its own weight and the sofa he could see in the other room had stuffing coming out of one of the cushions.
“Hello?” he called out, not surprised when no one answered him. He’d been told that he would probably show up to an empty house; that was way he‘d been given a key before he even left Chicago. He was just glad that the cab driver knew where he was going. The house was so far away from the center of town, Lance wondered if it was still actually in Bayville.
Lance made his way upstairs and started looking through the rooms to see which one would be his. The room at the end was locked, and one room obviously had another inhabitant. He wandered into one of the empty rooms and set down his bags. This room was his now, and no, he was not sharing. If they needed the room later, there was a couch downstairs.
Activity: I’ll probably be posting a few times a week and/or as often as Lance will be needed.
