General Appearance:
Sam does not have a very imposing appearance about him. He is smaller and skinnier than a lot of his classmates, almost no muscle definition on him, and if you were to ask him he would tell you that his nose it too big. His hair is normally a long mess, with natural curls which annoy him to no end, wishing that he had straighter hair. His skin is closer to being pale than it is to being tan, though he does have a little color to him since he does spend some time outside. His complexion is mostly clear, though he does get the occasional pimple on the side of his nose or the back of his shoulder.
Style wise he tries to go with a bit of a skater look, despite not skating. The includes a lot of Tee shirts and over shirts. A variety of hats, caps, and beanies adorn his head. With jeans or cargo pants for his pants. He almost always wears a pair of black sneakers, though for gym class he has a pair of white ones. His clothing tends to be wrinkled and show signs of wear and dirt as he is often likely to just pick up a shirt off his bedroom floor and wear it then he is to wash them, washing them only when they start to smell.
Sam's lack of self confidence shines through with how he holds himself, normally slouching and looking down with his shoulders hunched which makes him look even shorter then he is.
Personality: Sam has always been a quiet boy, never really feeling like he has fit in with any group, because of this he has taken to keeping to himself. Reading books and playing on his computer instead of going to hang out with friends. Going out to the park and watching the birds alone, or even just eating lunch alone. He has never really made an effort to reach out to other people, mostly because he thinks that they wouldn't want to hang out with him. He looks at the kids around him who are better looking and stronger, good at sports and he just feels undeveloped and awkward. He has let his fear of rejection control his life, protecting himself from said rejection by avoiding situations where he can be rejected.
Still, while he doesn't seek out the company of others he does interact now and then, and when he does he does his best to be polite. He says please and thank you to the lunch ladies when ordering his lunch, he opens doors for women and old men, even if he doesn't make any sort of eye contact with any of them. He doesn't like to be rude, and he knows his parents taught him better than to be rude.
This is not to say that he isn't a normal teenager and does everything his parents say. While he does do most of what he is told he does shirk his chores. He doesn't like doing them, and will try and find ways to skate by on doing them, working just hard enough that his parents say he can be done. This is especially true for cleaning his room, he enjoys a bit of clutter in his room. Though his backpack is also a mess, thankfully his parents don't have any control over his backpack.
Over the years and class projects he has found that he is more comfortable following someone else's lead. He likes to be told what to do so he can just do it instead of stressing over everyone doing what they are supposed to, dealing with people talking back, and having the pressure of leadership. Knowing that he likes to follow he will rarely argue with someone if they tell him what to do, well if he is working with them that is. If a random stranger was to walk up to him and give him an order he would likely only get a quizzical look of confusion.
Most of the time he is a very laid back kind of guy, live and let live. But he can get worked up upon occasion. Like many kids that tend to lean to the brainy side he has been picked on in the past, and if he does think that someone is going to pick a fight with him he normally becomes a bit panicked and looks for a way out knowing that he isn't a strong person. Though he gets angry seeing others picked on and beaten up. He wants to help them but also doesn't want to become a victim himself and it normally becomes a huge mental dilemma for him.
With the development of his mutant powers he tried to keep it hidden from his parents, afraid of what they might think of his son. Though the plan backfired when him and his family were approached by the Xavier Institute. Now that he is in the institute he has started taking his power training seriously, eager to learn how to use these powers, mostly for purposes to aid him in his everyday life. He has learned to rely on his powers more then he should and has started to become lazy, using his powers for tasks when he can as opposed to doing it himself.
Powers: Sam is able to manipulate the force of Gravity around himself, and a small area around him. As of now the area he can manipulate is only about 100 feet without straining himself, with up to 500 kg (1,102 lbs) of matter being directly manipulated at once before adverse effects start to happen to him. As his powers grow, as well as his skill it is likely that both of these numbers will increase allowing him to use his powers against larger and heavier objects. Currently the ways he can manipulate Gravity are limited mostly to increasing or decreasing the gravitational pull on an object, effectively increasing or decreasing the weight of something, as well as altering the direction that Gravity pulls a person or object. In order to change the effective weight of something he doesn't come up with a number, but more of a mental picture. Picturing it flying to make it weightless, or picturing how hard it is to move.
It is more intuitive to Sam and he has yet to fully work it out and because of this he can sometimes mess up on what he is trying to do and make something crash to the ground harder than he wanted, or make something shoot up faster then he wanted to. The same goes for the directional pull of Gravity, he just pictures how he wants the person to fall and it just seems to happen. For instance he might picture someone "falling" upward in to the sky which would cause them to float up. However his range still stands and they can not leave his range, at most they will stay at the edge of his range. It is by altering the effective weight of himself or something else, and picturing the way Gravity pulls it that he can make something fly.
Now as opposed to selecting an object in his range he can also increase the general force of Gravitational Pull and the direction that Gravity is pulling in the area around him in a ten foot radius. This would effect everything other than himself in this radius, because by using himself as the center he can escape the effects of his own gravity. This allows him to "control" more objects than he normally could, but at the expense of losing all direct control. For instance if he was to make an area around him void of Gravity then altered the Gravitational Pull to push away from him in all directions, he could push everything away from him, but only that one action. He couldn't control how they moved or do anything to a particular object in his field. An example of this would be if he was in the middle of a fight between the X men and the Brotherhood and used this ability everything withing ten feet of him would be pushed away, both ally and enemy alike. He would show no ability to stop any particular object or person from being thrown. However, he would be standing in a small "circle" of normal gravity, lest he rip himself apart. So it would be possible to avoid being thrown if one was to be holding on to him when he did this, thus staying in the "safe zone". It is also possible for exceptionally strong or heavy mutants such as the Juggernaut and the Blob to be able to resist this push, where physically weaker ones would be left flying.
Furthermore he can do small alterations to his own body to "enhance" his physical abilities. Weakening the pull of Gravity around him to make his body move faster, or increasing the pull as he punches someone to increase the force of the blow. With these abilities he is not able to reach the same power potential as mutants with super speed and strength, but he is certainly able to make himself "faster" and "stronger" than one might think he would be by looking at his body. Normally he doesn't use this to fight, but rather to aid him in gym class.
Weaknesses: The most obvious and glaring weakness in his powers are the range that he can use them at, with a range of 100 feet and beginning to strain himself at manipulating 500 kg of matter, it is clear that he has a long way to go to even begin to master his powers. While he is able to push past these limits to a degree doing so tends to disrupt the gravitational field around his own body, putting him at serious risk of injury as the gravity may increase around him resulting in him breaking his own ribs or collapsing a lung, or it may pull in a new direction causing bones to break and pierce through his skin and flesh. Currently if he was to go past 110 feet away from him, or directly manipulated 550 kg of matter or more he would be seriously at risk to dangerous and adverse effects. Because he does not want to risk a mishap with his own gravity field that could cause him serious harm he does everything in his power to not exceed these limits lest he kill or maim himself.
While he is able to deflect many physical attacks and send enemies flying away from him he is still unable to defend himself against a mental assault, as well as attacks that are based on energy. While he does have a basic control of his powers, he is still at the point in his development where his emotions have a strong degree of control over his powers, causing them to act up without his wishes in times of emotional turmoil. While afraid he might suddenly start to fly as his body tries to escape the perceived danger, or while mad he might make a strong force of Gravity pull away from him, sending everything flying away. These actions are not under his control and risk to expose not only him, but mutants in general if it was to act up at the wrong time. This will continue to be a threat until he is able to gain more control over his powers, and keep his emotions in check.
Power Potential: Potentially Sam has a lot of potential. With training and practice both his range and limitations on Mass will be greatly improved, and it is also theoretically possible for him to learn how to create Gravitational Singularities as well as use these singularities as "wormholes" by protecting the travelers with their own Gravitational field. However the possibility of these actions are far beyond his current level and remain only possible in theory. It is yet unknown if he will ever reach the level of skill required to accomplish these feats.
History: Sam was born and raised in boring Bayville, where nothing interesting seemed to happen. Well that was fine with Sam, growing up he delved in to books to escape the boring day to day grind. While other kids played football and ran around, Sam sailed down the Mississippi River with Huck Finn, went in to space with Ender Wiggin. He never made a lot of friends, but that was just fine with him, his friends were in books and together they went on adventures and saved the world time and time again.
He likes to think that he had a normal childhood, maybe even a better than normal one since his parents are still together. He was raised by loving parents that tried to instill good values in to their son. Sure they hassled him now and then to do his homework and chores, as well as to go outside and play. But, it was a house of love and he was happy growing up.
As he got older he did start to envy the other kids a bit more, the more active ones that had a lot of friends, the popular crowd. He had a few friends, a couple of other nerdy bookworms but they didn't really do much. They would hang out now and then and play a couple of video games, but over all it didn't seem to be the same. He watched the other kids, the jocks and the cheerleaders and he wished he could be like them, with a lot of friends, they seemed to have the perfect life. Which Sam didn't seem to have anymore.
Things were still going just fine at home, his parents were still the same as ever, it was at school where the problem was. He was starting to get picked on, everything from catcalls in Gym class as people called him a girl and made fun of how weak he was. To the occasional bully beating him up and forcing him to help them cheat. Normally by letting them copy off of his work, though now and then they would try and make him sneak in and grab the teachers papers since he was a bookworm that stayed in the classroom during breaks anyway. He wasn't stupid however, and it only took the bullies beating him up a few times before he started figuring out ways to avoid them, what routes to take and when to duck down in another hallway to try and avoid notice. Sometimes it would work, other times it wouldn't. His dad tried to give him the bully talk, about how bullies are really afraid and how you need to stand up to them. Sam tried that, once. His reward was a bloody nose and a black eye, not to mention a couple of kids laughing at him for his trouble.
This went on through all of Junior High to the point that it became routine for him. Nothing new, just displeasing. He still tried to avoid the kids as much as he could, and once he decided to get some revenge. He was letting one of the bullies cheat off his homework, having gotten the answers wrong on purpose so that he would bomb the assignment like the oaf he was. While it seemed like a good idea in his head it made the kid mad enough that him and his friends were waiting for him after school. Sam tried to get away from them, but they chased him, ducking down an alley only to find a dead end he panicked. They were going to find him any moment and he had no where to run, until he noticed that his feet were no longer on the ground, his body was floating upward and out of the alleyway until he landed on the roof of one of the buildings. The bullies below trying to figure out how he could have vanished in to thin air.
This freaked Sam out, he didn't know how he flew up here or what happened. He was afraid and wanted to think it was a dream, but it wasn't. He now knew that he wasn't like other kids, and he was going to learn how to use this. To his surprise when he made it home his parents were not alone. It was then that he was approached by the Xavier Institute. Where it was explained to him and his parents that he was special and that they would be able to teach him to use his gifts and protect him from those that would fear and hate him for his abilities. At first he was resistant, not wanting to think of himself as a freak, wanting to deny what he was told. However in the end he agreed to attend knowing that what he was told was correct, that he wasn't like other kids and it would be best to be around those like him. That and he was secretly eager to learn how to use his abilities, seeing them as some kind of super power.
Other:
-Won't make eye contact-
-Fidgets a lot when sitting down-
-Will sing songs under his breath sometimes-
-Enjoys cooking despite his normal distaste of doing things himself-
Sample RP: Sam sat there in the lunch room alone, watching the kids all around him socialize and eat. A pang of sadness briefly pulled at his heart, he did wish that he could be like them, but he didn't think anyone would want to be with him. Why would they? He wasn't that good looking in his opinion, he was horrible with sports, plus he was a freak. He thanked God that know one actually knew that last bit, but sometimes he felt like people could tell by looking at him, how could they not? He felt like there should be some kind of sign to make him stand out from normal people, but if there was he hadn't found it and no one else seems to have picked up on it either. Not even his parents had found out his secret.
He let out a small sigh as he looked down at his lunch, a grease soaked burger and some soggy fries, with a carton of chocolate milk of course. That was school food for you, disgusting at it's finest. Reaching down he picked up one of the drooping fries and put it in to his mouth. The taste was familiar and he didn't so much as grimace as he ate, school food was something one learned to cope with early when they went to public school.
As he ate his eyes continued to scan the lunch room until he found her, Sara Andrews, a girl that sat a few rows ahead of him in his English class. She was a cute girl, but way out of his league. She was popular and funny and just perfect in every way to him. He couldn't see why she would even want to talk to him, let alone go out with him. She didn't even seem to know he existed, the story of his life.
God I am such a coward, why can't I go up and talk to her?
Because she will just laugh at me or something, that's why. Just look at her, she is with all her friends, they would probably all just laugh at me if I tried to talk to them.
Letting out another sigh he decided once again against talking to her and sitting alone wishing that she would magically come talk to him and want to be with him. He knew that would never happen, life didn't work out like that, and even still he couldn't get past his fear of being laughed at by them to make the effort. He was afraid that if he did and they did laugh he would just die, drop dead right there from pure embarrassment.
"God I suck." He said quietly to himself as his gaze left Sara and fixated on his food. Focusing intently on what he was eating so that he didn't have to think about how pathetic he was to not even be able to talk to a girl and say hi.
Activity: When I get in to a site I like I am very active. So it is quite likely that I will log on every day and post frequently. Meaning almost everyday that I have posts to make.
